Fire Engine Crash

Bread and Cheese

On the 27th April 1984 one of Benfleet’s Fire Engines was rather over enthusiastic in responding to a call out on the way down Bread And Cheese hill.

Whilst we don’t know the actual cause of the crash we can see from these photographs the after effects on the pavement, front gardens.

In the above photograph we can just see the advertising hoarding for the Maharaja Indian restaurant which indicates how long it has been open for.

We can see that the fire engine received quite a lot of damage.

It looks like the car was a write off.

  • I think at the time this was Busbys restaurant, (or was it Buzby as in BT), ?? which was later struck by lightning and closed soon after.
