Childhood Memories

Growing up in Benfleet

I was born in a ground floor flat on Vicarage Hill on the 23rd October 1931, attended by Nurse Revell and the Doctor, and was named after his daughter.

Three years later we moved to Clarence Road, next door to the Ward family. Mr Ward was the Pharmacist at Timothy White and Taylor the Chemist in the High Street, next door to my Grandfather’s Golden Crust Bakery. I attended Stanley House school until war broke out.

My best friend was Janet Keen, daughter of the Manager of Barclays Bank, she was also chief bridesmaid at my wedding in St Mary’s Church in 1953. Janet died several year ago of a brain tumour, she was married at St Mary’s three months after me.

I also remember Michael Tomlin, who has since died. I  recall two brothers named Clive and Cedric who lived in a house at the bottom of Vicarage Hill on the opposite corner to Stanley House, next door to a bungalow where Mr Anderson and Partner had a dental surgery.
