Francis Charles Coxon

A mystery no longer

This cartoon appeared in the Benfleet, Canvey and District News published in December 1922.  If anyone has any further information regarding the cartoonist or the background to his “Why not give the Houseboats a chance?”,  please get in touch.

His grand children have subsequently been in touch and provided the following information.   Born in 1896 in Leigh on Sea, he died in Oxford 1975. During the first world war he illustrated Blighty Magazine and a sketch from the trenches graces  the site.    I suspect he was a member of the Benfleet Yacht Club in view of his car registration number and I thought customised number plates were a more recent phenomenon. By the way Francis is the one smoking a pipe.

Francis is the one with the pipe. The number plate makes me think that he was a member of the Benfleet Yacht Club
