(21) Henry Gordon Kelsey

Sergeant Henry Gordon Kelsey (21) was born in 1st Qtr. 1895 in Sydenham, Kent to Henry Charles and Minnie Constance Kelsey. In the birth records he is shown as Henry Gordon John Kelsey. In 1911 the family were living in “Violet Villa” (No. 184), Kiln Road. His occupation was given as a fruiter and florist assistant. However in the 1918 Electoral Register for Benfleet there is no mention of the family.

He enlisted in the 11th Battalion of the Essex Regiment and was sent to the Western Front on 30th August 1915. At some time he was promoted to Acting Sergeant. He died of wounds on 2nd July 1917 as a prisoner of war. There is no known grave for him. He was 22 years old.
