There was a celebration of the Queen’s Coronation in the farmer’s field at the back of Watlington Road Benfleet, what is now Jotman’s Farm. This was instead of a street party, the whole of the South Down estate was involved.

I went to the Coronation party fancy dress as a much protesting ” jack a dandy”. I wasn’t into dressing up. My sister Janice was dressed as an english rose. I remember the evening entertainment when my uncle Bob Woodroff and Mr Gregory dressed as Wilson Kepple and Betty and performed the famous Sand Dance, shuffling to and fro on the stage in the marquee in Howards top field. Happy memories of all my cousins and childhood friends who lived on the estate.
