Reginald A. Beckett

It's that porch again!

Drawn by Charles Archibald Nicholson
Front cover of the 2001 reprint

In 1901 Reginald Beckett wrote a book, that captured a way of life that was soon to disappear, called Romantic Essex.

He walked the highways and byways observing the people and places he encountered and he had this to say about Benfleet :

“….we arrive very soon at South Benfleet, where another church demands attention. The exquisitely-carved wooden porch is one of the most wonderful things I know; probably nothing finer of its kind is to be found outside Nuremberg. It seems to me to breathe the very spirit of the Middle Ages”
