Benfleet level crossing

About 1960's

A  G.Prout & Sons Ltd. catamaran built at the Point Canvey Island being transported to the Southend Jetty for launching by crane. Later a launching slipway was built at the Point factory.

  • Brilliant, we were told that she pushed the child clear. I have told my little granddaughter that because my Grandmother saved her son, he lived, I lived, her mother lived and she is alive. We may yet have a future family historian. Thanks

  • My father’s mother was killed at this spot about 1900-3 when she attempted to cross the line when the gate was closed to foot and motor traffic. if anybody knows more information about this I would be grateful as I am compiling my family history.

    Note from Editor:  A quick look at the newspaper archive found the following: 

    Report in Essex Newsman dated 7th August 1909.

    Mrs Alice M Allbury of Aubrey Street, Barking, rushed on to the line to save her child at Benfleet railway station, when she was knocked down by an engine and killed instantly. Her husband witnessed the tragic occurrence. The child was saved.
