At Rest.  St. Mary Churchyard.  South Benfleet.  Essex.

13 April 2011.  Great Yarmouth Racecourse.

The Memorial Plaque is in honour and memory of the men who died during mine laying operations on the North Beach, Great Yarmouth.  It was unveiled by Yarmouth Mayor Michael Jeal and 92 year old Sidney Gibbs who witnessed the blast that killed his two comrades.

The commemoration was organised by Ken Read, a former civilian explosives worker with connections to the Royal Engineers.  Mr. Read said: “The people killed defending home soil were just as important as those who died fighting overseas.  The invasion did not happen but they were not to know that.”

  • This is my Great Uncle Jackie. He lived in Kents Hill Road with my Nan and their parents, until he joined the army. He was tragically killed on Great Yarmouth beach when a land mine blew up killing him and three other men. We take my nan to visit his grave every November 11th.
