Launch of Tilbury and Chadwell Memories

Latest Community Archive site launched on Sunday 1st April 2012

The Tilbury and Chadwell Memories site was launched on Sunday 1st April 2012 in the historic London Cruise Terminal building in Tilbury. This Community Archive is managed by the long established Tilbury Riverside Project. The launch was part of a larger event for the Tilbury Centenary Day celebrating the exact 100th birthday of Tilbury being granted Town status and becoming an Urban District Council. There were a number of Tilbury organisations at the launch as well as several events.

The Events

The events included:

  • A lecture on the Tilbury Town history by Jonathan Catton, the Heritage and Museum Officer.
  • History walks along the sea wall organised by local historian Mike Ostler and
  • Tours around the Tilbury Port in two old Routemaster busses organised by Tilbury Port.

The Launch

The launch of the website was started by the Thurrock Mayor, Councillor Charles Curtis accompanied by his wife Wendy. The Organiser of the Tilbury Riverside Project then formally opened the archive followed by Archive volunteer, John Matthews, explaining how people could contribute. There was then the cutting of the official cake created by the local catering college.

Benfleet Archive was invited to attend the event to fly the flag for local archives. However many of the visitors to our stand lived in Benfleet, but had worked in Tilbury at some time so they had a dual interest.

We wish the Tilbury and Chadwell Memories site great success. If you have any memories of Tilbury and Chadwell please visit the site at www.tilburyandchadwellmemories.org.uk and leave comments and contributions.

There is the BCA video of the day below, and another one on the Your Thurrock website.
