The new Appleton Comprehensive School in Croft Road opened its doors to pupils in 1965. A group of 178 eleven year olds were the first intake, the first Headmaster was Mr E. E. Haynes BA.  This was the launch of the new comprehensive education system.

Stephen Dean was one of the first intake in 1967 he went on a school holiday cruising along the Kiel Canal, in the German State of Schleswig Holstein, aboard the MS Devonia.

  • Bill Wakeham here, remember this cruise well. In addition to the inaugural school intake, we also had some second years join us. I remember Robert Mann as one of these. We had some fun on board and the fancy dress went well. I was in Houghtman? Dorm and our dressing up was sheets and toilet brushes etc. Fond memories from long ago.

  • I can remember that trip, think we were just above the engine room.  Very basic but ponds of fun.
