Fred Whisstock

Truly a renaissance man

Frederick William Whisstock, known as Fred Whisstock (1878-1943), or in his cartoonist mode as “Quip.” A Resident of Southend for over 55 years he was by all accounts a truly multi-talented man and artist. In the art field he designed stamps, he painted as a freelance artist, designed posters, drew cartoons and caricatures, designed labels for Britain’s toys (now highly collectable), painted stage scenery and miniatures on ivory.

Outside of art he appeared in over 50 productions of the Southend Operatic Society and kept goal for Southend United long before the professional team was even thought of.

A full obituary can be found in the Southend Standard newspaper of September 23rd 1943

  • Hi
I too have a watercolour by Fred Whisstock – dated 1904 of a house overlooking a pond or river, with a latin date of 1688 on it. Very lovely.

  • To Gary Pickard: Not sure that this will get to you. But if it does, I might be interested in your Whisstock watercolour.

    Thanks,
