Does anyone recall the clothing factory that stood on the corner of School Lane and Essex Way in the late 1940s, early 1950s?

Denise Neale has provided us with three pictures and has been able to name one lady, Peggy Eason.

Peggy sits alone on the front steps of the building and just behind her there is a small plaque, difficult to read, but it appears to say ‘Turtella Dress Co. Ltd’.

In the other two photos the word Turtella is clearer. There are several other young ladies in the pictures, probably staff at that time.

Apart from a mention in the London Gazette dated 1st May 1964, a search on the internet found nothing about this company.  Any help would be appreciated, perhaps you worked there, or know someone who did!

  • My mum worked there in the 1960s and 1970s, at that time it was called Dorothy Wards. Next to the factory was the hall where we went to Brownies again in the 1960s, 1970s.
