Benfleet Community Archive is creating a digital archive of Benfleet’s history. We cover the areas of South Benfleet including the Benfleet Downs, Hopes Green, Tarpots and North Benfleet.
We need help from the Community in order to populate the archive. Can you help by:
- Contributing your own research using the website.
- Making comments about articles on the website.
- Letting us record your memories of Benfleet .
- Lending us your photographs to make digital copies.
- Lending us your documents to make digital copies.
If you do not wish your photographs and documents to be out of your sight, then we can visit you and use our mobile scanner to copy them. Alternatively we will be having sessions at the Benfleet Library where the copies can also be made.

The Archive would not have been possible without the hard work and initiative of Essex County Council Libraries and The Essex Record Office in supporting the entire scheme and in particular preparing a successful bid with the Heritage Lottery Fund for funds to support this and five other archive setup projects in South East Essex.
We are a member of the South East Essex Community Archive Network (SEECAN) along with the following Archives in South East Essex:
Billericay Community Archive
Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive
Laindon & District Community Archive
Rochford District Community Archive
Tilbury & Chadwell Memories
Wickford Community Archive
We also work in close association with the Benfleet and District Historical Society.
The Heritage Lottery Fund provided the funding to set-up the Archive in 2011. Since then we have supported ourselves by fundraising and with the help of commercial sponsors. We have two commercial sponsors, Countryside Estates and Alan Simpson & Co Solicitors, whose financial contributions offset some of the running costs of the site enabling us to concentrate on recording more Benfleet history.
