The Radio-Active Fango Baths Ltd

A development to terrify

Many people today may be quite pleased that this plan never got off the drawing board.  Today bathing in radioactive mud would be a terrifying experience, but in 1924 some entrepreneurs thought this a cutting edge medical treatment. This is a document sent out showing plans to build a suite of mud baths beside Benfleet Creek to match any spa.

The expected profits look good on paper and the intention was that the Radio Active Fango Baths were to be built ‘within a few minutes of Benfleet Station.

Document sent to potential investors from H.J. Monson, St John's Wood, London, in March 1924
Document donated by the late Gilbert Wines.
