Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson, 1867-1949, spent the first nine years of his life in Benfleet/Hadleigh (the parish boundary ran through Hadleigh House !). He is buried in St Mary’s churchyard and the church itself is “adorned with a host of tasteful fittings and furnishing”, which he designed for it. For further information, see here.
Here we are concerned with his artwork relating to Benfleet, which includes the design of the war memorial.
