Hamilton Chapman

Artist Who Bridged The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries

Benfleet Marshes painted by Hamilton Chapman in 1925

We know little of this artist, whose works appear at some of the major auctions.  We do know that in 1923 (or 1925 as the date on the back differs from that on the front), he painted this picture, which he called Benfleet Marshes. He was active in the period 1881 to 1903, so we must assume he was elderly at the time of his Benfleet foray. Any further information would be appreciated.

Subsequently the following appeared in the Ipswich Journal  and Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire  Advertiser :

An Ipswich artist, Mr Hamilton Chapman, has a large painting of a spring time scene in this year’s Royal Academy  Exhibition. Mr Chapman is also represented in the Royal Institute by a watercolour drawing entitled  a Gypsy encampment.
