I and my partner Sam purchased this house in March 2018.  We were left these photos of the house that was built in 1900, it was named “The Elms”.
I am hoping someone might have some information that they can pass on as I would love to know who took the photos and some more history on the house.
If you have any information please add it as a comment at the bottom of this page.

  • I to remember this house in the early sixties. I lived in Uplands Rd off Wavertree Rd and would see this quite imposing house every day as I went to Appleton School (first intake 1965). I’m sure the front of this large house had some sort of wood cladding then but it just be my imagination and stood on the Oakfield Rd/ Clifton Av side of Benfleet High Rd. I also remember a Ralph living there, as he also went to Appleton but I didn’t know him, as we tended to stick with our own classmates. Someone said that one or both his parents had an American connection and would love to know if this was true.

  • I was in Ralph’s class at South Benfleet County Primary and at Appleton School. I went to his 16th birthday party in this house. I lived at 139 Oakfield Road.

  • Lovely to hear Karen Edermaniger mentioned. She was in my class at Benfleet Primary in the 1960s. I must have walked past this house thousands of times on my way to school at Appleton for five years. Not sure if it is east or west side of the High Rd. My mate, Mike Hobday would know as he still lives in Oakfield Rd!

  • I *think* this was my grandparents’ family home, sold in the 1940s? Bertram Boutcher might be a name in the records. I’d love to know more!

Editor: A quick look in the 1937 Electoral Register shows that John Howell Boutcher and Annie May Boutcher lived at this property at that time. Hope this information helps!

  • Hello Jodie

I spent many happy hours in this house in the 1970’s when I was a teenager. The Edermaniger family lived here then, I was friends with one of the children – Karen. Her parents were Jim and Beryl and she had an older brother called Ralph and a younger sister called Nicky. I remember a beautiful willow tree in the back garden and when Ralph got married, the reception was held in the garden. This beautiful house was a very happy house, filled with love and laughter. I hope you are very happy in this lovely old house.
