GREAT TARPOTS FARM
As farms go Great Tarpots farm in 1841 was small, consisting of 33 acres, 2 roods and 9 perches (marked in yellow on the map). 19 of the acres being devoted to arable farming.
It does however seem to be a popular venue for auctions as you can see from the sales catalogues of 1889 and 1917. Comparing the two with a 28 year gap the lots seem very familiar and would indicate that very little had changed except the location … from South Benfleet to Thundersley.
The two photos of the farm show a substantial boarded property, which was located in the vicinity of the arcade and snooker hall …. In fact opposite the existing Tarpots restaurant.
