Sailing, Sand and Sunshine

Do you have any stories or pictures to share?

This photograph is believed to have been taken in the late 1930’s. At this time during the summer, Benfleet Yacht Club members were in the habit of taking their boats and meeing out on one of the sandbars in the Thames that appeared at low tide.  Rather than fight for space on the beach, families could have all the fun of sunshine and sea on their own sandbar.  Games would be played and when the tide turned the boats would head for home.

I am told that Mrs Elvidge lived in Church Creek next to the ferry, can anyone confirm this as that does not seem quite right?
