Church Road Residents

A Gathering of the Residents - circa. 1950

Peter Renaut, a former resident of Benfleet, sent us the photo below. The photo features residents of Church Road and was probably taken in the early 1950s.

The venue may have been ‘Tarpots Hall’ and the decorations suggest the photo was taken around Christmas time.  Peter has identified some of the people but many remain unknown.

If you can put names to any of the faces or can help with the venue, the date or the reason for the celebration, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

You can contact us via the ‘add a comment’ section at the bottom of this page or alternatively, email us on: info@benfleethistory.org.uk

  • I live at number 26 Church Road, does anyone know much about the family that lived there before me? They were called the ‘Craddock’ family.

  • Editor: Many thanks for confirming the necessary alterations. The tags have been altered and are hopefully, now correct.

  • I agree with James W. Tags 3 & 5 should be switched. Tag 3 is definitely my mother Rita Fabb, who only in the last 12 months moved out of no. 46 after living there for 65 yrs. She is now 92.

Further, I can add that Mr Thorne was Ed and his wife was Doris.

  • Tags 3 & 5 should be swapped. Esme is 5 and Rita is 3. I lived at No 44 for 23 years and was priviliged to call Rita and Basil Neighbours. Bought the property from Esme in 1990 who I believe moved to the south coast to be nearer her sisters. I still live in Benfleet.

  • I lived at No. 4 Church Road, we moved there when the house was first built. My dad had come out of the army, so could not purchase his own property. My parents lived there until 1971, before moving to Thundersley. I do not know about any get together, sorry. I do remember the sweet shop in Church Road, I used to go in there with a one penny and buy lots of sweets.
