Shipwrights Drive

Mid 1950s View from the Hollywood Restaurant

This picture was taken before the Benfleet Road end of Shipwrights Drive was made-up, some time before the mid 1950s.

The person who took the photo stood directly opposite the Hollywood Restaurant facing towards the Benfleet Road. The signpost is advertising the Hollywood and the window just to the right is part of the restaurant.

  • I can clearly remember Shipwrights Drive before it was made up. As children in the late 1940s and 1950s living in Nicholson Road, we used to play on the field opposite King John School (not fenced in then) and spend hours of fun playing in the woods there too, climbing trees and building dens (particularly after the hay was cut on the field), after which we would make our way to the Hollywood Restaurant where sweets could be bought. If it was wet, we’d hop across the puddles back up the road munching our sweets on the way back home. Great times and lots of fun, wonderful memories.
