Warriors' Day

Grand concert

The Comrades of the Great War 1914-1918 (South Benfleet Branch)held a ‘grand concert’ in the Assembly Rooms on March 31st. 1921.

The following is a copy of the programme for that concert which has been kindly donated to be re-produced on this site by Doreen Brazier.   Doreen’s brother David joined the printers at a later date and the company became Brazier & Naish.

The concert details were across the centre pages, but the bulk of the programme is taken up with advertisements for local traders helping to sponsor the event.  This gives us a wonderful chance, not only to see what type of businesses were trading in those days, but also allows us to place their whereabouts from the addresses and relate them to the Benfleet of today.

Following the first few pages of adverts there is a reminder from The Anchor there will be just time at the interval to slip down and ‘have one’ – and back again with being missed”!

This programme is very delicate but a wonderful example of printing all those years ago.

If anybody remembers where the Assembly Rooms were situated please let us know or add any comments on this article.
