Benfleet Urban District Council - Annual Report 1967 - 68

An interesting look at Benfleet in the 60s

The original of the B.U.D.C. Annual Report shown below was kindly made available to the Archive for scanning by Phil and Maureen Packham.

Look at some of the costs in the report and compare them with what we pay today!

The report mentions “….increases are being forced upon us. Gas, Electricity, National Health charges, Food prices are all going up.”  That sounds familiar!

The Highways Committee reported “……the widening of High Street, Hadleigh, and the introduction of a one-way traffic system to improve traffic flow in central Hadleigh when Ministerial approval is received.”

It was also reported that sixteen unmade roads had been made up during the year and it was planned to make up a further eighteen roads in the next financial year, including Hill Road, Thundersley Park Road, Clarence Road North and Shipwrights Drive.
