St Mary the Virgin, South Benfleet

Introduction

As the oldest building in Benfleet, much has already been written about its history and architecture and, rather than repeat research by knowledgeable folk, we are grateful that John (Jack) Dobson and Roy Tricker have given this site permission to reproduce their booklets.

The earliest image that we have found so far for the exterior of the church is a watercolour by F.W. L. Stockdale dated 1812. If you know of any earlier ones, we would be pleased to hear from you. There are also ground plans from the 1840s and 1860s by Jonathan Savill and William White respectively.

The Church has its own website :     www.stmarybenfleet.co.uk
