Anchor Inn and War Memorial
This drawing was donated to the “2nd Time Around” UNICEF shop, to be sold in aid of the charity.
Diana Hawkins, who contacted us to let us know of its existence, was a volunteer at the first UNICEF shop to open in Benfleet (shown in the drawing) around 1977/78. After some years the shop moved to the corner of St. Mary’s Drive and High Road at one end of the parade of shops where it remained until just recently.
Re-development of this site has seen the shop move yet again, when in late late 2013 it moved further along the High Road, to a site opposite the old pumping station.
The signature on the drawing appears to read Leonard Ward and it is 58/100. Leonard Ward is also mentioned on another page on this site. If anyone can shed any light on this gentleman or has any other examples of his work, which could be added to this site, please let us know.

My mother worked for him, he lived in Harborne, Birmingham. I have two of his pieces of work, this was in the sixties.
