Our earliest painter?

Stockdale was active between 1803 and 1848, illustrating what we would now describe as travel books. The picture of St Mary’s Church is dated 1812 and is the earliest painting of Benfleet traced so far. It resides in the British Library and can be accessed by clicking on the web address:
