The life and memories of Iris Sugg (nee Knightley ), a resident of Benfleet for 90 years, are well covered in the “People” section of the website . Here we are concerned with her paintings. Aware that photos of old Benfleet were predominantly black and white, she decided to fill in the missing colours with a series of paintings.

Dorothy Thurgood also known to me as Auntie Doff. She lived behind St Mary’s Church but I don’t remember the road name. She was my absolute favourite Great Aunt!!
These lovely paintings remind me so much of my childhood. My Mother, Dorothy Thurgood was born in the Endway in 1922. She knew Benfleet as shown in these pictures and told me about the stepping stones to Canvey Island.
My Grandfather, Henry Thurgood was the village Blacksmith and his Smithy was situated between The Hoy and Helmet and the Church steps.
What wonderful images, I would have loved to have known Benfleet at that time!
