(11) Private William Martin
Died on the Somme
Private William Martin (11) was born in Kettering in Northamptonshire in late 1891. In 1911 he lived at Pleasant Cottages, High Street, Hadleigh with his parents Thomas and Mary Jane Martin and was a general Labourer.
He married Daisy Lilian Farnham in the 3rd Qtr of 1913. She was born in Hendon in 3rd Qtr 1892 but lived most of her life in Hadleigh. There were no children.
William Martin enlisted at Southend into the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, highly likely because this was the regiment of the county he was born in.
He was killed in action in France on 3rd August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. Most likely while on general duties holding the trenches. He was 24 years old.
