General Grocers at 304 High Road

Growing up above my parents’ store

I have just looked at your history page for the High Road at South Benfleet.  Not sure if this helps but I grew up above my parents’ store at 304 High Road.  I believe we moved into the store in approximately 1961. They ran it as a general grocers and all went well until the Co-op opened down the street across from the Primary school. That’s when times got hard.  I remember my mum cooking the sides of pork for the bacon and measuring out staples that we would never think of buying loose now.
Next door was a TV repair store. The butchers, I believe, is still there.  As kids we would watch sausages being made. There was a place that sold fish because they used to smoke the fish out the back of the shop.
Next door (where the small Sainsburys is now) was a small Vauxhall car place.
I will look for any pictures I may have from that time.  When Kents Hill school opened we moved to a house on Clarence Road North and sold the store shortly thereafter.
This photo was taken at a much earlier date. 304 High Road is the first property on the left just past the garage,
