Green Road- the beginnings

The terraced houses at the top of Green Road
Google Maps

I live in what was Carlton Villa, number 6, Green Road, and would like to find out more about my house, and the top end of Green Road in particular.

Number 6 was part of a three house specification build, put up in 1895, and was sold to Wickford Electricity Company around 1920-30, as evinced by its Crittall Windows, and the fact that it was rendered in Snowcem.  The building is now Bernard Braine House.  At sometime, (together with in-fills on both sides of number 4), all were combined into a Boys’ Home, and it is this I would like to know more about.

I met a lady many years ago who had been a cook when the Boys’ Home was running, and I have a copy of what was written on a stone on the outside of number 8. I have evidence of where openings between the various buildings had been, as, what was the WRVS in-fill, is now the East Wing to number 6.
