World's First Mini-roundabout (5) being used.

Benfleet Council had the photos taken on the 11th June 1970

The mini-roundabout was a brand new experiment so Benfleet Urban District Council (the predecessor to the Castle Point District Council) had photos taken on the 11th June 1970 to see how the experiment was going. It appears to be working quite well.

However already changes have been made with just arrows showing and no central circle. Also the blocks put in the centre of each of the approach ways have been removed.

Until 1972 the only road access to the Canvey Island oil tanks was via this junction. A lot of fuel was driven through a densely populated town.

This was still new and cars approached the junction cautiously.
